Job Summary: As the Head of Platform Engineering (Interim), you will play a pivotal role in guiding engineering teams through a transformation process. You will lead the evolution of their infrastructure team into a shared service and centre of excellence focused on Azure cloud IAAS and PAAS, networking, and end-user computing. Your responsibilities will encompass modernising skills, introducing new working practices, and leveraging outsourcing when necessary to achieve scalability and maturity. Key Responsibilities:
Lead the platform engineering practice through a transformation process, aligning it with product management principles.
Establish and nurture engineering disciplines and enhance working practices to facilitate increased utilisation of Azure cloud, upskilling the practice where required.
Provide ongoing support for the modernisation and transformation of legacy datacentre-centric infrastructure into a cloud and SAAS-based environment.
Develop the engineering practice's capability to take full ownership of products developed by third parties, upskilling as needed.
Lead talent acquisition efforts to build engineering practice teams to match the target operating model's requirements.
Drive increased technical capabilities within the solution engineering practice, particularly in Cloud and DevOps practices (e.g., CICD, Automated Testing, DevSecOps, Infrastructure as code, and platform observability).
Define and execute ambitious yet realistic engineering strategies and roadmaps in collaboration with senior leaders.
Collaborate with IT Architecture to ensure engineering practices align with the wider strategy and architectural vision.
Mentor and develop multiple teams of Engineers, ensuring successful engineering practices in line with our agile delivery squads and organizational values.
Establish governance, controls, and transparency measures to ensure the effectiveness of our engineering practices.
Foster a culture of exploration, experimentation, and innovation to stay at the forefront of technology trends.
Promote continuous improvement within the solution engineering practice and identify areas for growth.
Skills & Experience Required:
Proven experience modernizing multiple engineering teams in a product-centric delivery environment.
Developing strategic solution engineering capabilities within organisations.
Leadership of multiple engineering teams in a dynamic, agile, product-centric environment.
Delivering solutions leveraging Cloud technology, especially Azure.
Leading cloud adoption, including migrations for existing products.
Creating an innovative environment within the organisation's solution engineering practice.
Delivering enterprise-grade solutions using various components, frameworks, and tools (e.g., software-defined networks, Terraform, Intune, Wintel, Linux, Azure IAAS, and PAAS).
Comprehensive experience with project life cycles, including waterfall, agile, and hybrid methodologies.
Minimum of 8 years of work experience in an engineering manager or lead role.
In-depth understanding of DevOps practices (e.g., CICD, Automated Testing, DevSecOps, Infrastructure as code, containerization, observability).
Proficiency with modern agile delivery management tools like Azure DevOps and Jira.
Confidence in devising, communicating, and driving the delivery of a solution engineering strategy aligned with IT and business architecture.
